9 Awesome Self Care Routine Tips
You need self care, it’s a game changer.
Building a Self Care Routine
I spent years wanting to build a self care routine. I read about it in all my self help books, in blogs and everywhere else on the internet. Even though I wanted to do it, I could never seem to make it a priority. It was so hard. With all the distractions in the world, with all the other things to do, I just couldn’t seem to do it.
After years of inconsistency and wishing I could do it, something finally changed. It wasn’t over night, but I was able to finally stick to the routine. The benefits have been beautiful. Getting here has not been easy, but through trial and error, it was achieved.
What is a self care routine?
A self care routine is something you do a certain amount of days every week that help to benefit you. It can be physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, social and more. Activities include, but are not limited to:
- Meditation
- Yoga
- Work out
- Journaling
- Drawing
- Cleansing techniques
- Listening to music
- Breathing exercise
- Connecting with loved ones
- Dancing
- Painting your nails
- Hiking
- Watching motivational content online
- Reading
- Positive affirmations
- Enjoy a cup of coffee
- Drink a glass of water
- Create a no phone before x time in the am
- Walking
This article is going to discuss the tips on how to get a solid routine in place. The key is being strategic and choosing to commit. With the proper game plan and support, you will take your morning routine to the next level.
1. Don’t force things to be a certain amount of time
When I first started building my routine, if I was forced to do something for a long time, I would procrastinate doing it. Let’s use meditation for an example. The idea of mediating for 30 minutes was more than enough to make me run for the hills. It got pushed to the next days to do list for weeks at a time.
However, 5 minutes of mediation was an easy thing to check off my to do list so by keeping it attainable and quick, I was able to get a habit in place of doing it daily. After a few weeks, I would bump it up a little bit more each time.
Now, I meditate daily for 30 minutes and I enjoy it. I slowly built it up and this was crucial for my success.
2. Have a few keys staples in your routine
You should always have some form of the following: A type of meditation, breathing techniques, a form of writing, a form of exercise and a form of learning. The rest is up to you. These are staples that really help me keep my balance and will definitely help you too!
3. Important things to journal about
I stick to 4 areas when I journal. I start with what happened the day before. It’s great for memory retention and memory skills. Then, I talk about anything I am excited about or feeling emotional about. The third is writing what I am grateful for and I finish by writing affirmations about myself/life. These topics are the best.
4. Types of meditation
There are so many options for this. There are guided options or you can do it unguided. If you want some ideas on different styles of meditation, click my link on meditation here.
5. A form of learning is valuable
Continuing to learn is so important because the more knowledge you have, the more power you have. When you feel like you’re above learning new things, you become stagnant. When you believe your way is the only way, you end up living within a very small scope. You miss opportunities and you become stuck in your ways.
Being open to new ideas that challenge your own will open you up to ways of living you didn’t know existed. One of the most influential quotes I’ve read was from a famous greek philosopher. It reads “The only thing I know, is that I know nothing”. When you are able to stay humble and remember to be a sponge, you will gain more than you could imagine. You aren’t expected to be an expert on everything in life, so learn to at least be open to listening to others. You never know what type of value it may bring.
6. Always pick exercise you enjoy
If you hate to run, don’t force yourself to jog. Do you like to dance? 15 minutes of it will do the trick? Do you like making TikTok videos? Then learn a new TikTok dance routine. Do you prefer to do something light? Then, opt in for some yoga. No one ever said exercise needed to be boring and you don’t need to hate it.
It’s okay to have fun with it. You don’t need to work out for a full hour either. Do what you can. Be gentle with yourself and make sure you enjoy it.
7. Have someone who you check in with
Having a partner can be so helpful. You each can do it together or you can check in with each other on a daily basis. Doing it with someone makes it much more fun and accountability will help you make sure you actually do it.
8. Use an app to track your progress.
I use an app called habit. You can access the app here. I love ticking things off a check list so this is always perfect. This keeps a reminder front and center to get it done. It also gives you an overview of what you’ve achieved for the month.
9. Get in the habit of not doing anything else until your AM Routine is finished
It is very easy to get distracted. By forcing yourself to get it done at the start of the day, you never have an excuse to skip it. This is one of the things that helps me most in sticking to my routine. My AM routine is the first thing of the day everyday.
Conclusion
I use an app called habit. There are many options in the apps section of your phone. I love ticking things off a check list so this is always perfect. This keeps a reminder front and center to get it done. It also gives you an overview of what you’ve achieved for the month.
